We apologize for the summer snoozefest of crappy films.
Here is vx staff's top recommendations
Sean:
1. POM POKO
Awkward, but insanely cute with an eco-friendly message!

2. SCOTLAND, PA
Macbeth in a 1970's fast food joint with chris walken and maura tierny(news radio,er)

3. MOTHER INDIA
A classic defining bollywood epic!

4. GOZU
Mike at his most surrealist. It will leave you creeped out and confused, and ocassionally laughing.

5. LONESTAR
In the vein of a film noir, with an incredible commentary on race and border politics, and historical interpretation.

Anders:
1. THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN
From jeunet & caro(amelie, delicatessen) a story of a circus strongman protecting a young boy from an mad scientist who steals dreams. Visually stunning!

2. GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI
A story of a mafia hitman who lives by the code of the samurai. Music by the rza.

3. KISS KISS BANG BANG
Neo-noir action with crime and private eyes. From the writer of leathal weapon and the monster squad. Both fun and funny.

4. REPO MAN
Punk rock! Repo men! A glowing trunk! A plate of shrimp? Watch for a cameo by the circle jerks as a lounge band!!

5. FALLING DOWN
The struggle of a man just trying to get home.

T.H.
1. MYSTERY TRAIN
Recently, while channel surfing, i found jim jarmusch's 1989 mystery train running on tcm and was pleasantly reminded as to why i was drawn to independent cinema in the first place. Three individual elvis presley inspired tales that intertwine to tell a clever story that is humorous, poignant and at times. Quite startling . The current sad state of snooze fest agenda driven indie cinema could take a lesson from this film..
Plus.. As a bonus you get joe strummer.

2. CASE OF THE BLOODY IRIS
I love stylish european horror thrillers and this is one of the best. Clearly hitchcock inspired, this over the top 70's sexy and brutal visual feast which stars luscious euro icon edwige fenech in one of her hottest roles will keep you wondering till the fin.. Ooh baby!!

3. ROBSON ARMS
Funny, sexy, and at times, quite deep, the interweaving tales of vancouver city's robson arms are a prime example of why t.V. Shows are becoming more popular than the recent hollywood efforts. Rich details and colorful characters make this enthralled viewer long to be one of robson arms tenants.

4. ONLY HUMAN
A young girl brings her fiancé home to meet the family. Problem however, her family is jewish and her hubby to be.. Is palestinian. Aside from being a painfully funny screwball comedy, it also succeeds in the fair and objective way it deals with the seriousness of the israel/palestinian conflict. This recent film from spain is a real treat!

5. THE KILLING
Stanley kubrick's 2nd or 3rd film (i forget), a caper film full of suspense, lies & deception, i love this beautifully told crime film with a screenplay written by kubrick and pulp fiction icon, jim thompson. Also features a great femme fatale performance by the underrated marie winsor along with an exceptional supporting cast. Any fan of film noir cinema will enjoy this.

Merrick:
1. CAN SHE BAKE A CHERRY PIE?
Hailed as the"west coast's woody allen" henry jaglom's films are filled with awkward truths and a charm rarely achieved by more "mainstream" directors. Offbeat, dialog driven, comedy with karen black!

2. THE PERFECT CRIME
A great example of modern spanish cinema. Genre hopping, madcap entertainment with plenty of lies, twists and despicable characters. Director alex de la iglesia is one to watch!

3. THE HOMECOMING
One of the most perplexing, bizarre philosoophical stage plays ever. By nobel winner harold pinter. Lars von trier fans should take note.

4. LUNACY
Homespun madness from the czech republic fuses stop-motion animation and live action in this surrealist asylum fairytale. Stylish, dark and ritualistic gem!

Grant:
1. THE VICE GUIDE TO TRAVEL
Not your average travel video! Visit some of the lesser known vacartion sites and touch on culture deeper than your average ego driver tour guide.

2. LOGAN'S RUN
Fun sci/fi! One of the better big-budget high-premise flicks. See the original before it's remade!

3. RODGER DODGER
Clever dialogue and driven comedy (commentary?) focusing on the young apprentice of a sucessful womanizer. Featuring jesse eisenberg (Squid and the whale).

4. PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK
Beautiful, atmosheric and very eerie. This defies explanation and must be seen.

5. BLACK BOOKS
Three misanthropic dispomaniacs navigate the wild world of retail. Great brit sitcom by the makers of 'the it crowd'.

Dan:
1. THE MAN WITHOUT A PAST
Surreal love story about an amnesia victim and a salvation army worker.

2. PHANTASM (1978)
If david lynch made a horror film. In the 70's it would have been phantasm

3. IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE
Director wong kar-wai's masterpiece about infidelity and the fleeting nature of relationships.

4. THE TENANT
Roman polanski's tale of suicide, murder, cross-dressing and terrible neighbors.

Sophia:
1. SPIDER BABY
Aka the maddest story ever told, an under-rated cult classic about a disfunctional family of psycho-freaks living with an family curse. Greedy relatives run into trouble when they try to remove the afflicted family from their inbred home. Kooky and spooky do not pass up the chance to see the insanity of this one!

2. NIGHT OF THE COMET
In 1984 a comet wipes out the world population turning survivors into zombies. Two sisters from like sherman oaks manage to survive the zombifying fallout to go on a rampage of girlish abandon! Wonderful performances from Catherine mary stewart(the last starfighter) and robert beltran(commander chakoatay-star trek voyager). A true 80's gem of a zombie film!!

3. SPECTRES OF THE SPECTRUM
A bulldada of found video footage is what craig baldwin uses to weave a story of science fiction. Great collage and cut up film work makes for a tantalizing web of conspiracy theories, alternate histories, and slanted fictions. Highly imaginative piece that should be viewed!

4. METROPOLIS (2001)
Master manga artist and animator osama tezuka(astroboy, blackjack) offers us a masterful piece of breathtaking anime. The distant future is technologized but robots and human don't get along. A great detective story and a tender friendship story make for some compelling animated material!

5. KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE
Best B-movie from the 80's about clowns ever!!!!
